Tom Ford Orchid Collection: Thoughts and Swatches Galore

The Tom Ford Orchid Collection.
The *Tom Ford Orchid Collection has arrived and it is a stunning as one would imagine it to be! From the rich onyx black and deep purple packaging to the ephemeral, limited-edition nature of the powders and lip color, this array of products effortlessly embodies the energy of the summer-to-fall transition. With gilded tones and rich violet hues, this collection is sure to captivate.
Kindly scroll on for more details, swatches and images of the products in action as well as the Bottom Line…
// FRAGRANCE //
  • *Tom Ford Black Orchid EDP (also available at Neiman Marcus): With notes of bergamot, gardenia, orchid, vanilla and incense, this timeless original captivates the senses with a powerful and sultry dry down.
  • *Tom Ford Velvet Orchid (also available at Neiman Marcus): An oriental floral with a unique sweetness, this juice mixes black orchid notes with citrus, honey and rum.
  • *Tom Ford Orchid Soleil EDP (also available at Neiman Marcus): Like summertime in a bottle, this features notes of tuberose, clove and chestnut cream along with orchid for a warm. sun drenched and singular experience. Oh…and the golden flacon is breathtaking, no?
  • *Tom Ford Black Orchid Solid Perfume: Housed in a weighty, black ribbed compact, this liquid perfume alternative is purse friendly and extremely potent, making it excellent for travel.
  • *Tom Ford Velvet Orchid Solid Perfume: The opulent eggplant counterpart to the above, this compact offers the same transcendent Velvet Orchid scent in a solid format; just a touch along the neck and pulse points and the fragrance lasts all day.
Marvelous for travel…the Tom Ford Solid Perfume.

  • *Tom Ford Nightbloom Powder in Velvet Bloom (also reviewed HERE): Finely milled, this beauty powder–in the most unique cool lilac pink shade–is resplendent.  This sheer powder layers and builds beautifully for a flushed look that is decidedly different than the other blushes in my collection.  It has a creamy, slightly luminous finish that performs well on the apples of the cheeks…simply divine.
  • *Tom Ford Nightbloom Powder in Black Bloom (also reviewed HERE and HERE): A soft yellow gold with lovely radiance, this highlighting powder is sure to flatter a spectrum of skin tones.  The highlight it imparts is more of a sheen than a shimmer (bonus!) and it brightens the face without creating an unwanted spotlight on pores and fine lines.

// LIPS //
  • *Tom Ford Lip Color in Velvet Orchid: My absolute favorite item in this collection, this incandescent mauve lipstick has marvelous opacity, supreme hydration and a pearly finish that bathes lips in pigment and light. Despite owning a host of Tom Ford lipsticks (grateful!), I can safely say I don’t own a single shade that is similar and the lavish, deep purple case makes this the hue to pursue.
  • *Tom Ford Lip Color in Black Orchid: I am told this cult favorite has been off of the market for a few years but those that missed out on its oxblood beauty will now have a chance to own it, this time in a sublime, black ribbed case.  The color payoff on this gem is insane!

I combined the Tom Ford Black Orchid Collection with key pieces from my stash:
  • *Million Dollar Tan Cabana Tan Extreme Body and Face: I have used the summer to experiment with various self tanners and am so happy to have had the chance to try the Million Dollar Tan line.  With premium ingredients that moisturize and balance the skin while imparting a believable golden brown tan in mere hours, this formula is scented of coconut so the summertime feeling never has to end.
  • *Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior Deep Wrinkle Minimizer (reviewed HERE): A touch of this hyper-moisturizing serum along my orbital area and “elevens” lines truly seems to make a difference; I’ve been using it day and night and am noticing a sigificant diminishment in those pesky yet important zones.
  • *Hourglass Vanish Foundation in Sand (reviewed HERE with swatches of every shade!): Applied with the *Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Brush, this full coverage cream foundation stick is every bit as dreamy as it sounds.  It blends well and lasts all day, making it one of my favorite foundation launches (and there have been so many!) this year.
  • *DECORTE Soft Powder Foundation in Warm Beige (reviewed HERE): This powder has been in my handbag for over six months now; finely milled and lushly pigmented, it evens skin and banishes shine with a single application.
  • Tom Ford Skin Illuminating Powder Duo (reviewed HERE and HERE): I used the darker shade as a soft bronzer/contour and consistently appreciate the warm, gossamer finish it creates. A worthy investment, indeed!
  • *Tom Ford Nightbloom Powder in Velvet Bloom and Black Bloom (also reviewed HERE): I blended the cool lilac pink Velvet Bloom on the apples of my cheeks and buffed the golden Black Bloom along the high points of my face (cheek bones, brow bones and down the bridge of my nose)
  • *By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Bubble Glow (reviewed HERE): Forever in my makeup bag, this baby pink shadow stick instantly brightens eyes; I sweep it along my lower lash line to fake a good night’s sleep.
  • *Viseart Eyeshadow Palette in Sultry Muse (reviewed HERE): This eyeshadow palette never gets old!  Brimming over with velvety warm neutrals in a gorgeous satin finish, Sultry Muse is perennially in my eyeshadow rotation.  If you’ve nver tried Viseart and are looking for a place to start, this is the palette.
  • *Tom Ford High Definition Eyeliner in Black (reviewed HERE): My go-to black liner for the waterline, I swept this indelible inky obsidian shade along my lower waterline for extra impact that does not budge.
  • *Sisley-Paris So Curl Mascara (reviewed HERE): Two coats creates lush and dark lashes with immense length and a fluttery finish.  Love this formula!
  • *La Prairie Cellular Lip Enhancer (reviewed HERE): One of my favorite lip bases to date, this creamy primer neutralizes naturally pigmented lips so the subsequent shade applies smoothly and with accurate color payoff.  I’m on tube #2!
  • *Tom Ford Lip Color in *Velvet Orchid and Black Orchid: I applied two swipes of each (separately, of course) in the images below.

Bottom Line: I hope you found this preview of the *Tom Ford Orchid Collection helpful and engaging; I am thoroughly enjoying every element in this launch and can’t wait to see it on Tom Ford Beauty counters in the coming weeks.  While everything within the collection is beautiful, I would definitely focus on the  limited edition powders and lip color as I suspect they will quickly sell out!
Will YOU be picking anything up from the collection?  Do tell!
Good things ahead, including a travel skincare and beauty feature, a Space.NK intensive and a host of new product procurements.  Now that I am finally home from my little vacation, I look forward to responding to your latest batch of comments and emails, too ; )

    Both of those lip colors look absolutely gorgeous! I just purchased my second ever Tom Ford lipstick – I might need to add a few more 🙂

    Hi professor!! I really like your swatch of velvet orchid, but it does look lighter and more pinky tone than other swatches. Is it because you used the lip base? Or just because you are naturally stunning?? :))) I am thinking to go to Neiman and try the color myself. Thank you so much for the review and swatches.

      Hi Gloria,

      Thank you so much…the Velvet Orchid shade might look a touch lighter on me due to the lip base and direct sunlight in the photos. As a light pink/nude lover, however, I don't find it too dark at all…it is a pearly medium mauve…so good!

      I hope that helps to clarify the shade…thanks for reading!
