Transitional Beauty: 22 Products That Effortlessly Flow from Summer to Fall

My transitional beauty and skincare selects.
Even though we may be in the heart of summer, our minds are already becoming cognizant of the inevitable transition to fall (I begin teaching a new semester of classes in less than a month!), and with that comes a seasonal shift in the products involved in our respective beauty routines.

In response to this intrinsic change, I have carefully chosen 22 skincare and makeup products (25 if you include 3 style picks!) from Nordstrom--my unmitigated go-to for all things beauty, both now and always--that will seamlessly guide you through the gradation of seasons that awaits.

Kindly scroll on for more details, swatches and images of everything in action as well as a preview of my initial recommendations for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and the Bottom Line...

Skincare etc.
  • *Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser: As I type this, I have used the last drop of this gentle yet effective cleanser (rarely happens when I test so much here at BP HQ) and am reminding myself to put my backup tube in my shower. It exfoliates without disrupting the natural barrier of the skin while removing every last trace of dirt and makeup.
  • *Kate Somerville ExfoliKate: For moments when I want to enhance exfoliation, this cult-classic takes care of business in the most consistent fashion. I use it once or twice a week in the shower to smooth my canvas without irritation; my skin is fresh, rosy and glowier with every session.
  • Charlotte Tilbury Magic Serum Crystal Elixir: I just started my second bottle of this Vitamin C-rich which works well in warm and cool weather alike; the brightening effect is palpable and I sometimes use it alone on no-makeup days for a healthy radiance.
  • *Guerlain Abeille Royal Anti-Aging Youth Watery Oil: For a lightweight cloak of moisture with impressive anti-aging benefits, this hybrid Guerlain formula, which is equal parts serum, oil and toner, cannot be beat!
  • *Kate Somerville SPF 50 UncompliKated SPF Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray: This potent SPF doubles as skin perfecting setting spray for a filtered result that looks exceptionally's optimum seasonal transition SPF.
  • *Sisley-Paris Self Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care: Even though I'll likely be in the sun less in the fall, I still love a sun-kissed glow and this luxurious cream is the best for a true brown tan tone that I have ever tried. SometimesI can just apply this (in my experience, let it develop overnight for best results)skip foundation and add a dash of cream blush and be good to go.
  • *Clé de Peau Beauté Enhancing Eye Contour Cream Supreme: Still my eye cream of choice, this nourishing formula works well both day and night (rare with an eye cream, in my opinion) and the way it smooths and plumps fine lines around the orbital area make it a favorite for both my mom and me.
  • *Sisley-Paris Velvet Sleeping Mask: I love the way this mask works overnight to hydrate skin while "resetting" its response system. When I'm extremely tired and searching for a minimalist skincare option before bed, a singular and ample dose of this mask is the positively revitalizes.
  • *BYREDO Eleventh Hour: Fragrance during seasonal transitions can prove challenging as finding a juice that harmonizes duality of both seasons is rare. For me, BYREDO Eleventh Hour--which is rife with notes of bergamot, rum, cashmere, fig and Tonka beans--blends the sultry mood of summer with the sensual coolness of a fall evening. In sum, it's the best of both worlds and wholly recommended!

  • *La Prairie Skin Caviar Perfect Concealer Shade 5: I am very pleased with this opulent new concealer release from La Prairie. Infused with caviar-powered skincare, this lightweight, high coverage formula banishes under eye darkness while looking almost invisible...a little goes a very long way and its ability to resist creasing--even in humidity--is commendable.
  • *BY TERRY Eclat Opulent Warm Radiance 100: This melange of skincare and lush pigments form the most flattering veil of perfection on one's skin. It's as if one's canvas has been transformed to velvet and the effect lasts the entire day. I am completely smitten with this formula (as is its creator, Terry De Gunzberg) and envision myself wearing shade #100 well into the heart of winter as the warm neutral hue is self adjusting.
  • Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream: I missed the initial release of this creamy tan concoction when it first launched nearly two years ago. After search high and low, I am thrilled to see that Nordstrom has been restocked with this modern classic, which I'm told is subtly reformulated and now a part of the permanent collection (though, if you're serious about it, I would purchase before it sells out again). This ultra-natural looking cream is buildable without revealing the slightest hint of texture; it makes skin look like it's been blessed by the sun in the most chic way possible and I love applying it with a beauty sponge for a warm and diffused take on traditional contouring.
  • *Clé de Peau Beauté Cream Blush #4 Perfect Peach: Just a touch on the apples of one cheeks does wonders to light up the face with a natural flush that looks impeccably pretty on everyone. Blushes may come and go with the season but this one--which blends pink, peach and nude beige--is always within an arm's reach. Try it and you'll wonder what you ever did without it.
  • Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand: I am on #3 of this gel-meets-cream formula, which looks utterly ethereal on the high points of one' face. The pearly champagne tone is universally flattering and I love using my ring finger to gently blend it into my upper cheeks, center of forehead, down the bridge of my nose, Cupid's bow and center of the chin. Never glittery or disco ball-esque, it's highlighter for grownups!
  • Hourglass Ambient Lighting Infinity Powder: I finished the complexion with a sweep of this clever new formula, which blends the two shades of the light diffusing Hourglass Ambient powders with a dash of the luminous Hourglass Strobe powder for an even, poreless, matte canvas that still channels plenty of natural glow. It's the multitasking product you never knew you needed.
  • *Chantecaille Le Chrome Luxe Eye Duo in Kenya: I swept on this deep incandescent burgundy all over my upper lids and used a small brush to blend it along my lower lash line for continuity. I then used the cool gray-meets-lavender as a transition color up to my brown bone. This duo simultaneously embodies the smolder of summer and changing leaves of autumn. So good.
  • Guerlain Mad Eyes Felt Waterproof Eyeliner: A waterproof liquid liner is a liner for all seasons in my book--especially since I wear contacts and battle allergies for most of the year. The intense black formula glides on with precision and ease while yielding an indelible line that doesn't's technically a "fall" launch that you will find yourself using plenty of during the remainder of summer.
  • Hourglass Unlocked Mascara: I ordered this on a whim and am so glad that I did! I am already an ardent fan of the Caution Extreme Mascara due to its ability to create massive length and enviable volume and the only difference, in my experience is that the new Unlocked is tubing, which means much easier removal and zero possibility of smudging. If you like tubing mascaras but year for the volume and length provided by traditional mascara formulas, you will  find great success with Unlocked.
  • Jouer Pink Champagne Lip Liner: I recently rediscovered this retractable lip liner in my stash and forgot how much I enjoyed wearing it. The pinky nude shade is the only shimmering lip liner in my repertoire and the creamy pigmentation lasts all day without flaking or migrating. Lately, I've been wearing it--with great delight--with absolutely everything.
  • *Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Lip Gloss in Rose Quartz: I love the plush and moisturizing nature of this gorgeous gloss. It's clear with a tender sparkle that works just as well as a hydrating base for lip color to come as it does as a dose of reflective shine atop lipstick.
  • Tom Ford Lipstick in Spanish Pink: Over the years of beauty writing, I have both purchased and received a lot of Tom Ford lipsticks, oft considered the gold standard in the luxury lip color vertical. The shade that I have repurchased time and again in Spanish Pink. This peachy pink nude compliments a rich tan as effortlessly as it flatters fair can make a dark lipstick lighter and add a creamy depth to a very pale hue. It's perfection and perennially in my purse.
  • Kosas Lipstick in Rosewater: Neither too light nor too dark, this classic rose hue accentuates the natural flush of one's lips without overpowering. It's the quintessential "my lips but better" shade that performs beautifully on a spectrum of skin tones.

The *Chantecaille Le Chrome Luxe Eye Duos feature a delicate pairing of coordinating eyeshadow tones that can be worn sheerly as a soft wash of color or built up to an intense smoky situation. The baked formula is silky smooth with lush color payoff and sophisticated luminosity that is radiant rather than favorite duos include the peachy taupe Monte Carlo and rich burgundy Kenya (worn in the images at the end of this post).

Style notes.
  • Equipment Signature Silk Shirt in True Black: I have three of these blouses in black as they are ultimate staples in my wardrobe. Invest in an array of Equipment shirts (pro tip: begin with black for the most versatility) and you'll have years of effortless dressing in your future.
  • Topshop Super Ripped Mom Shorts: I purchased these relaxed, high waisted shorts a month or two ago and am thrilled with their distressed style. The denim is lightweight yet durable and the price (currently on sale) cannot be beat for their quality!
  • Steve Madden Issey Block Heel: This is the heel of summer as far as I am concerned! The minimalist lines and translucent block heel (which, by the way, equate to a very comfortable experience) work on everyone and with every outfit from skirts to shorts to jeans. They're the kind of heel that you'll reach for again and again and if clear is not your style, rest assured they come in a myriad of other shades.

A close up of the Steve Madden Issey Block Heel in clear...these shoes match positively everything, no?

The Quintessential Summer Read: An Interview with Four Seasons at Angelino's Caroline McBride

Caroline McBride at The Little Nell in Aspen
One thing you may not know about me is that I am, and always have been, an avid reader. From the time I was three, I was devouring books while everyone else was running around, dressing their dolls and trying to master video games. One summer, I remember reading every single Nancy Drew book at my local library; I guess you could say I was committed. Now--between being mom, a professor and beauty writer--my reading time is a rare solace and a beautiful escape...a moment when I can consume rather than create, and I therefore choose my books carefully. If I'm not reading about Old Hollywood or 1960s fashion and makeup, then I seek a blithe romantic comedy-oriented tale, with lush locales and relatable characters.

Today, and in honor of the official launch date of her book Four Seasons at Angelino's (available at Amazon, Target, Barnes & Noble, BAM! and IndieBound), I am excited to introduce to you author Caroline McBride. I consider it a joy to call her a colleague in the beauty industry and a dear personal friend and have had the privilege of witnessing her elaborate writing process first-hand over the course of the last couple of years.

Four Seasons at Angelino's focuses on a restaurant PR executive who searches for "the one" while traveling the world for her job. This quest takes the reader on a veritable tour of some of the most interesting places on the globe; the novel--which spans twelve months--balances blissful escapism with satisfying depth. In sum, it is the quintessential summer read.

Kindly scroll on for my full interview with Caroline McBride wherein we cover her background, inspiration for the book and, of course, her favorite skincare and beauty products...
Four Seasons at Angelino's (available at AmazonTargetBarnes & NobleBAM! and IndieBound)

Beauty Professor: Tell us a little a bit about your background...where did you grow up and go to college and what types of jobs have you held since college?

Caroline McBride: As a travel addict, I often say I'm a citizen of the world, but I'm actually a product of beautiful Orange County, California where I was born and later raised near the ocean in Seal Beach. I attended Loyola Marymount University where I earned a BA in political science and my fantasies of becoming a legal advocate for crime victims fizzled out due to the cost of law school. Fortunately, at LMU, I was a research assistant for a leading expert on the Middle East, Dr. Joseph Jabbra, and he encouraged me to apply for a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. I won and was chosen to represent my native country, state and city in The Netherlands where I simultaneously earned a Master's Degree in International Relations from the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Thank you, Rotarians!

After grad school, I got involved in political fundraising, worked in the business affairs department at New Line Cinema, dabbled in modeling and taught for a year at Fairfax High School. Then I relocated to New York City and worked for five years as a licensed and bonded non-profit fundraiser for foster children where I was an integral part of raising millions of dollars through an art based charity project called ARTrageous. An acquaintance lured me into a COO position at an online culinary startup before I transitioned into an opportunity at Serafina Restaurant Group where I've served as the Director of Public Relations for over a decade, helping to launch the brand around the world. As a publicist I've consulted for other clients including DECORTÉ beauty.

BP: What inspired you to write "Four Seasons at Angelino's" ?

CM: Before the love of my life passed away in 2018, he encouraged me to write a novel, as books came up often in conversation and we enjoyed exploring bookstores together. It was serendipitous because my mind is always exploding with story ideas and, quite frankly, I was eager to make him proud. I chose to write a romantic comedy novel, my favorite genre, because who doesn't want a happy ending? I toyed with a few ideas and finally settled on a satire based on the time I spent traveling around the world to help launch new restaurants.

BP: How has your life experience influenced the content of the book?

CM: Every chapter is named after a different city and iconic restaurants are sprinkled throughout the story. I only write about places I've visited so I can give readers a realistic taste of each town or attraction. The workplace mayhem in the story is sensationalized, although rooted in chaos I've witnessed behind the scenes at restaurants. The romances in the book (and there are some juicy ones!) are fictionalized.

Caroline McBride.

BP: What do you want readers to feel while they're experiencing your book?

CM: Hopefully readers will reminisce about places they've visited while they enjoy a glimpse of cities they have yet to see. On the relationship side, the protagonist, Charlotte, is a bit of a trainwreck. She's so eager to find love that she jumps headfirst into the wrong situations with men while juggling work responsibilities. Perhaps some of her challenges as a single career woman will resonate with female readers; I want them to rest assured that they're not alone and challenges can be conquered. There are themes of perseverance, empowerment and patience throughout the story. Also, "closed mouths don't get fed." Fighting for your rights in the workplace and communicating your needs in relationships are paramount to success on all levels. As for men who read this book, perhaps they'll understand that it isn't easy being a woman, but I'm keeping my expectations low, lol.

Ultimately, I want this novel to make everyone laugh and accept the fact that some situations are out of our control. However, things often have a way of falling into place especially when we communicate effectively. Relax and try to have fun during your life journey!

BP: What are some of your most favorite travel destinations?

CM: Anywhere on the French Riviera, especially Cap Estel. London, Paris, Rome, Buenos Aires, and Marbella.

Stateside, I love Monterey where my family sometimes gathers. Also, Aspen, Santa Fe, New Orleans, Portland, Seattle, and Miami.
Caroline McBride.

BP: Since this site focuses on beauty, could you share some of your skincare and make up must-haves?

CM: The DECORTÉ Vi-Fusion line has transformed my skin. I use Essence (made of a combination of watery lotion and potent serum), Environmental Day Cream, Overnight Cream and 24/7 Eye Cream.
I'm addicted to the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum that Beauty Professor helped me pick out during an Oribe event she hosted at Cos Bar in Brentwood. It is light, moist and works with my freckles. If I want to go a little heavier, I use the Erborian CC Cream with SPF 25. It leaves my skin looking dewy while protecting it from the sun.

My natural eyebrows are white so I have to color them in every day. I usually use an eye brow pencil and then shade them in with ka-BROW cream-gel brow color by Benefit.

The Lightgasm Face Palette by Charlotte Tilbury serves my bronzer, blush and highlighter needs.
On makeup free days--there have been many during Coronavirus--I use Supergoop Superscreen Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40. It’s light and effective.

I love learning about new beauty products and Beauty Professor constantly tempts me with her coverage of great brands. I have my eye on By Terry Lash Expert Twist Brush and enjoyed her recent Instagram Live interview with the company founder. That will be my next mascara purchase.

Beauty Professor and Caroline McBride at an Oribe Event at CosBar, Brentwood.

BP: How would you describe your personal style?

CM: Practical. I usually live out of a carryon suitcase which limits my options and I must carefully plan my outfits to match my destinations. For example, in Seattle I'll pair an oversized sweater with black skinny jeans and ankle boots while NYC requires designer dresses and my most fierce heels for nighttime activities. At home in LA, denim shirts, sun dresses and sandals are routine unless I have an event.

BP: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

CM: Pre-Covid19, I enjoyed traveling, attending sports events and going to the theater. Coronavirus wiped that out, but some things remain: Visiting my family, Stand Up Paddle Board, bingeing on 90 Day Fiancé as a guilty pleasure, and of course reading and writing.

BP: What is one habit/activity/action that has helped you during this lockdown situation

CM: Writing has been a great escape and has allowed me to imagine a world free from evil coronavirus... I'm working on the sequel to Four Seasons at Angelino's and making myself laugh during the process. I would lose my sanity if I couldn't get lost in books.

BP: What advice would you give to someone who has dreams of writing their own novel?

CM: Go for it! Write your thoughts asap and worry about the details later. Revisions are exhausting and require extreme patience, but it's like putting on makeup: fine tuning and tweaking create the ultimate image you desire.

BP: Anything else you'd like us to know?

CM: Traveling fosters knowledge and if you can't see a place in person, at least you can experience it through books and stories. Enjoy Four Seasons at Angelino's and have fun along the journey!

Bottom Line: I hope that you enjoyed this in-depth look at the brilliant mind behind Four Seasons at Angelino's (available at AmazonTargetBarnes & NobleBAM! and IndieBound). Caroline McBride is truly one of the most well-traveled, passionate, authentic and interesting individuals I know and it's my joy to share the culmination of her world-class experiences with you.

If you like romance, travel and personal growth as I do, then pick up a copy for yourself and a friend...summer simply isn't the same without a breezy book in hand.

On Location: Beach Escape with Chantecaille Summer 2020 + Skin and Body Care I Can't Stop Using!

We finally made it to our local dog beach a few days ago...the wide open space and salty sea air was good for the soul and also provided the perfect backdrop for me to document and share some new beauty and skincare loves...chiefly, elements of the Chantecaille Summer 2020 collection and a host of warm weather skin and (firming!) body care that I've been loving as of late.

Kindly scroll on for more details, swatches and images of everything in action as well as the Bottom Line...

Elements from the Chantecaille Summer 2020 Collection
The latest from Chantecaille features two blush and highlight duos and four tinted lip balms that evoke the laid back yet majestic beauty of the ocean.

For face, the resplendent *Chantecaille Radiance Chic Cheek and Highlighter Duo in Rose and Coral offer sheer yet buildable color in cheek flattering shades that mimic a natural flush; the other part of the compact is replete with an incandescent highlighting powder that kisses skin with light.

While both finely milled pairings work on a spectrum of skin tones, I would suggest Rose for fair and light skin and Coral for medium to deep skin for maximum color impact.

*Chantecaille Radiance Chic Cheek and Highlighter Duos in Whale and Manta.

The *Chantecaille Lip Tint Hydrating Balm
In the summer, I find myself wearing less lip color overall, making the *Chantecaille Lip Tint Hydrating Balm the perfect option for moisturized lips with a juicy glaze of semi-shiny color. Housed in gorgeous blue metal tubes, they are the quintessential "apply without a mirror" option for warm weather. The limited edition formula--which is enriched with rose and cherry fruit extracts--comes in four shades, ranging from pinky nude to rich berry:
  • Beach Rose: A peachy nude beige with subtle radiance. **Worn in the images at the end of this post.
  • Calendula: A warm papaya orange-meets-coral.
  • Madeira: A fresh strawberry pinky red.
  • Verbena: A vibrant berry fuchsia.

// SKINCARE // A sublime mix of body musts for less-than-covered up moments and anti-aging and sunscreen staples for skin that thrives, even in the heat.
  • *African Botanics Svelte Cream: This firming body wonder is brimming with an array of skin-fortifying ingredients that nourish and fortify. I love how it makes my arms and legs feel their most taut in a single application.
  • Vita Liberata Body Blur: For an instant cloak of transfer-free color, there is nothing better, in my experience, than Body Blur. The tan brown cream evens skin while offering a warm glow that simply looks like really good skin. Every time I wear it on my legs, people comment about how tan and smooth they look.
  • *Supergoop! Glow Screen: I talk about this in some capacity every single week...the champagne glow, coupled with SPF 30 protection, serves as a brilliant primer for the makeup to come. On minimal makeup days, I just wear it gives your skin an undeniable "extra something."
  • *Supergoop! Zinc Screen: I keep this sunscreen in my bag daily as it's the only formula I put on Johannah; I love how the the 100% mineral formula is safe for her delicate skin.
  • *Serucell KFS Serum:Two pumps day and night give my skin a bouncy, bright and smooth radiance that gets better with use. It's been my anti-aging elixir since spring!
  • *Hampton Sun Bronze 8: For days when I want a bit of sun protection with the benefit of a sunless tanning effect, this SPF 8 aerosol is brilliant.
  • *City Beauty Perfecting Daily Veil SPF 39: For purely mineral protection with a skincare-infused, brightening and pore blurring result, this sunscreen is divine.
  • *Goldfaden MD Firm Believer: My other firming body secret as of late, this lush formula delivers a beautiful dose of moisture while toning my limbs for maximum firmness. It's been an unmitigated post-shower ritual this month.
  • *Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Glow Moisturizer: This moisturizer delivers intense yet exceptionally lightweight hydration while encouraging gentle cell turnover thanks to glycolic and lactic acid for balanced skin with a healthy radiance. If you're looking to transition your moisturizer for summer, I highly recommend this one.  As a special incentive for my BP family, use the code RACHEL20 for 20% off Kate Somerville Skincare, site wide.

The compete face.
// THE COMPLETE FACE // For a natural and glowing face that lasts in heat and wind, I applied the following:
  • *SUQQU Frame Fix Moisturizing Solid Foundation in Classic Tan 004: After purchasing my first compact over three years ago, this still ranks amongst my absolute favorite of foundations. It perfects skin with creamy medium coverage that blurs pores without settling into fine lines...oh, and it also lasts ALL DAY!
  • *La Prairie Skin Caviar Perfect Concealer #04: I am really enjoying the thin yet formidable coverage of this opulent covers darkness while still looking entirely natural and
  • *Sisley-Paris Phyto-Touch Sun Glow Bronzing Gel Powder: One of the best bronzers on the market, this silky true tan brown hue glides onto skin without the slight trace of simply melts and becomes one with one's canvas. I blended it in the hollows of my cheeks and around the perimeters of my face for gentle contouring and warmth.
  • Chantcaille Compact Powder Makeup in Camel: I use this to set the center points of my's a well-loved compact with major utility in my routine. Tip: use it under eyes to set concealer and you will be blown away.
  • *Chantecaille Radiance Chic Cheek and Highlighter Duo in Coral: I focused application of  this peachy blush on the apples of my cheeks and blended the highlight on the high points of my face for a lit-from-within glow,
  • *Chantecaille Le Chrome Eye Duo in Monte Carlo: I am smitten with this delicate eyeshadow pairing...the soft satin peach is a 1960s dream and the tender, glimmering taupe adds a smoky flair in the crease.  It's a sophisticated duo to say the least. I'll have swatches of all of the Le Chrome Duos in a.future post...stay tuned.
  • *Chantecaille Lip Tint Hydrating Balm in Beach Rose: I started my look with this warm nude rose's got just enough beige to feel very 1960s but doesn't wash out the complexion. Plus, its super moisturizing!
  • *Y et Beauté Lipstick in Calme: Stellar ingredients, intense pigmentation and the most gorgeous creamy mauve-meets-fuchsia tone, this lipstick is one of those shades that would look good on everyone. I feel like it polishes my face up in a single swipe...exquisite!
  • *Tower 28 ShineOn Lip Jelly in Magic: This ridiculously hydrating gloss features clean ingredients, an ultra shiny finish and flecks of gold fresh and full lips.

Style notes.
  • Drapey white button down: There is nothing more classic than a white button goes with any outfit and delivers a refreshing minimalism.
  • AGOLDE Dee Shorts: I have three pairs of these of shorts and wear them multiple times a week. They match everything and, due to their high waist, make a crop top not so them.
  • FitFlops: On my feet all of the time this summer, these sandals are equal parts comfortable and let toning...yes, please.
  • Ferragamo scarf: Easily one of the most versatile elements in my wardrobe, I always have Ferragamo scarf (or two) tucked into my comes in handy for everything imaginable (including an impromptu mask if necessary).

A summer staple: FitFlops

I'm never without a Ferragamo scarf...the versatility (hair! belt! clothing accessory!) is immense.
