An Interview with Lipstick Queen Poppy King + Swatches of the Silver Screen Collection

Above: BP + Poppy King at Barney’s NY Beverly Hills.
I have been enchanted by Poppy King’s Lipstick Queen line (mentioned HERE, HERE and HERE) for decades.  As an unapologetic lipstick fiend, the notion of a cosmetics line entirely devoted to an evolving menagerie of lip products is simply thrilling.  Imagine my delight when given the chance to interview Poppy during her most recent West Coast appearance at the iconic Barney’s New York in Beverly Hills.  Petite and stylish with flawless alabaster skin and a terribly warm personality, Poppy is a modern classic.  She is every bit as lovely as I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed our time together.
Kindly scroll on for the details of our chat, a closeup of the brilliant new Lipstick Queen Silver Screen lipstick collection as well as the Bottom Line…
Above: The Lipstick Queen aesthetic is perfection.
Beauty Professor: What inspired you to start your own lipstick line?

Poppy King: “I have always been mesmorized by lipstick…since I was age seven playing dress up.  I created the line out of necessity as I couldn’t find the right shade and texture on the market…the success of the Lipstick Queen line 25 years later demonstrates that anything is possible!”
BP: What are some of your favorite non-lipstick beauty products?

PK: “The Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, Diorshow Blackout Mascara and Eve Lom Tinted Moisturizer.  These products reflect my ‘lips, lashes and skin’ philosophy.  I also really love the Nya Mineral Sunscreen.”
BP: What Lipstick Queen product would you recommend to a woman who has never really worn lipstick?

PK: “Medieval Lipstick gives a really beautiful flush that looks like naturally rosy lips.”
BP: What are some of your favorite foods?

PK: (smiling) “Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, kale and ice cream.”
BP: Where was the last place you’ve traveled to, prior to your trip to LA)?

PK: “Paris.”
BP: Last film you’ve watched?

PK: Gone Girl.”
BP: What message would you like to convey to women concerned about the aging process?

PK: “Sophistication is just as beautiful as youth.”

Poppy’s prolific Lipstick Queen line most recently debuted the Silver Screen Lipstick Collection.  Housed in stunning silver metal cases, these vibrant, slightly shiny gems are all together wondrous.
I have already mentioned the Silver Screen lipsticks HEREHERE and HERE and hope you enjoy this closeup of all seven shades!

Bottom Line: My moments with Poppy King were splendid; as a longtime follower of her career, I found her presence and perspective to be refreshing and inspiring. Additionally, I am absolutely enamored by the new Silver Screen Collection (available at Barney’s NY and Space.NK)…have YOU tried a shade in this formula yet?
Good things ahead on BP including more foundation (!), a few style posts, new skincare and fresh video and a bit of eyeshadow ; )
Hope your week is moving along marvelously…xx,

    Hey there –

Still interested in Stella. Is there anyway you could take a full faced picture of you wearing it? I have no access to this at a counter and I just cannot see how purple it is. It almost looks blotchy in that picture you took. Is it not full coverage?

    Thank you –

    Rachel

I'll see what I can do, Rachel. As I mentioned, this lipstick is buildable…it goes on quite pigmented, but due to its light and slightly shiny texture, it is medium coverage in one coat and full coverage in two. Stella is definitely a true medium-deep violet purple and the swatches seem to depict that, at least on my monitor ; )

I just got Stella in the mail today, and was here looking at the other color swatches (Made It is tempting!).

Stella is EXCELLENT. It's not patchy at all, smoothly full-coverage, a slightly satiny finish but certainly not "wet look." It's a cool-toned purple-leaning magenta on me (I'm medium-fair, rather pink), but I definitely wouldn't call it outright "purple." The base color is very similar to Lancome's Rouge In Love in 381 Violette Coquette, but the shimmer is kind of blue-violet, which gives it an overall more purple-ish sheen. It's intimidating in the tube, but surprisingly wearable — interesting and fun, but not "omg look at my insane purple lipstick."

I bought it and while it is a very pretty lipstick, it is still a little more on the pink side then I had hoped. I would equate it to a slightly more blue version of Dior's mauve mystere.

    Hi Beauty Professor,

Firstly, love your blog. I've lurked for ages but never commented before.

I adore Poppy and her line! She was my first entree into lipstick all those years ago with her first line and so pleased that as a fellow Australian she's had the success she's had.

I have See Me and Have Paris and your post has got me wanting Stella, Come Up and Play It. Stella especially is a stunningly unusual colour.

    Many thanks,

    Gaby

      Hello Gaby!

Thank you for taking the time to comment! I am so glad you love the LQ line s I do…her success is indeed inspiring and her lipsticks have been with me since early college. So wonderful!

It sounds like you are building a lovely little collection of Silver Screen Gems and Stella and Come Up are highly recommended. Play It is beautiful, too, I just tend to shy away from bright deep pinks ; )

Stella is so unusual…it has a rather "stained glass" quality that is definitely rare in today's makeup market.

      xoxo and keep in touch!

Beauty Professor, thank you for another excellent piece! I am so happy for you, as I am sure this interview was a fabulous experience! Gaby, I am also a long-time fan of Poppy! I remember holding on to lipsticks from her first line for ages; needless to say, I am thrilled that she is so successful now.

I wonder if she was wearing "Have Paris" for the interview? I love that she is so uniquely stunning…
    Thanks again, Jacqueline

      Hi Jacqueline,

Thank you for the kind and uplifting words! Yes, this interview was a total joy, especially in light of how long I have followed Poppy's career!

I wish I would have thought to ask her what shade she was wearing that day…it most definitely could have been "Have Paris" but her line as such a gorgeous range of reds that it also could have been another shade. Will see if I can find out ; )

      xoxo and happy almost Friday!
