Ellis Faas Hot Lips in 408...Bold, Bright and Drenched with Pigment!

Above: The minimalist, streamlined Ellis Faas Hot Lips packaging.
I first learned of the Ellis Faas Hot Lips formula release while watching a video on Donna Shorts1's channel (her videos are entrancingly lovely and she has always been a great BP supporter) and when I witnessed the way in which velvety lip color glides on with intense pigmentation and coverage, I instantly went on the hunt to track it down, which, I might add, was no small feat.  I discovered that Space NK no longer carries the line at their counters, which led me to ferret out the formula at small beauty boutiques in the area...finally, I located them at Woodley and Bunny, a wonderful beauty apothecary in LA (though there are multiple locations) that caters to independent, niche and organic beauty and skincare lines.  My dear friend Merrady who manages the 3rd Street location kindly assisted me by phone (323/951-9906) and I had my Hot Lips arrive to my doorstep in a single day!

Above: L408 is described as a "baby pink" though I would say that it is the boldest baby I've ever encountered ; )
Retailing for $35, this wildly pigmented wonder comes in a silver, streamlined, click pen of sorts, indigenous to the Ellis Faas line; in this case, the applicator tip is flocked and, upon twisting up end, the rich, vibrant lip color is released through minute holes at the top.  L408 is described as a "baby pink" but I that it translates as much bolder (while still somewhat light) on my pigmented lips.  It's ability to be simultaneously soft, velvety, bright and electric is impressive...I can truly say that I do not own another lip color the likes of this!

Above: The velvet flocked applicator tip.
Above: The initial release of the lip color.
From a formula persecutive, this lip color is incredibly concentrated...just the tiniest bit (the size of a mustard seed or so) is sufficient to thoroughly drench the entire lip area with pigment.  I added a touch of balm before application and then dotted the flocked applicator onto my lips, using my fingers to spread and blot it down to a stain of sorts.  And therein lies the beauty of this formula...a minute amount and the lips are stained with rich color, a touch more and a full-impact lips are created.  I find that this formula wears better and feels more comfortable than the Ellis Faas Creamy Lips formula, which actually feels a tad dry in comparison, especially after a hours of wear.  It is lightly scented with the a subtle herbal fragrance that reminds me a bit of Anise...I love the overall effect and find the sensory experience delightful!

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis Seed Oil (Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dicalcium Phosphate, Stearalkonium Bentonite, Silica Silylate, Propylene Carbonate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Aroma (Flavor), Tocopheryl Acetate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate. May Contain[+/‐]:Ci 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), Ci 77491/77492/77499 (Iron Oxides), Ci 45410 (Red 28 Lake), Ci 15985 (Yellow 6 Lake), Ci 19140 (Yellow 5 Lake), Ci 42090 (Blue 1 Lake), Ci 15850 (Red 6/ Red 7 Lake).

Above: Hot Lips applied heavily and smudged out to a stain (not how much lighter the stained effect appears).
Below: Images of Ellis Faas Hot Lips L408 (in various lighting situations) applied directly from the tube and blotted down with my fingers...I much prefer the casual, imperfect application; it helps to downplay the boldness of this brilliant formula....

Bottom Line: The Ellis Faas Hot Lips formula in L408 is tremendous! Highly pigmented, terribly long lasting and fairly moisturizing (especially in light of its first to aforementioned attributes), this is a bold lip color lover's dream.  When I wear it, I opt for pared down makeup on the face and eyes as to not compete with its powerful color statement...that being said, L408 is the lightest, most subdued (!) of the Hot Lips shade offerings, which puts into context how "hot" this formula truly is.  I think I will be embracing this L408 tonight for my casual NYE gathering...it is just the shade to ring in the new year with zeal and gusto!

I hope you enjoyed this very last post of 2013...what a glorious year it has been!  Thank you for all of your support and encouragement...it is truly what makes this blog worth maintaining.  I should have my massive "Best of 2013" video post live later on this week (currently in the throes of editing) and can't wait to share it with you!

Blessings and beauty in the New Year...xoxo from my heart,

Video: Products Currently on Heavy Rotation (Winter 2013 Edition)

Above: Products mentioned in the video.
A couple of weeks ago, I was tagged by the lovely Taylor of My Lucite Dreams to discuss what's currently in my makeup bag.  I have also felt that the need to film new video is long overdue.  In turn, I am excited to share nearly 20 products that are currently on heavy rotation in my skincare and beauty routine.  Most are in my makeup bag as of late and, of course, the skincare products remain at home ; )

    Products Mentioned:

    1. NUDE Skincare ProGenius Oil...excellent to balance and hydrate skin in cool, dry winter weather, this glorious organic concoction absorbs instantly and adds a subtle, healthy glow.
    2. Erno Lazlo Phormula 3-9 Eye Repair Cream...my trial with this cream is ongoing, but one month into regular use and my orbital area is tighter, brighter and smoother.  Will update in another month...
    3. Rouge Bunny Rouge Genesis Original Skin Primer...this newest primer from the illustrious Rouge Bunny Rouge line fills in pores and fine lines and creates a seamless, even canvas for makeup application.  Just tremendous!
    4. Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation #213 (Reviewed HERE)...I am loving this glowing formula and enjoy mixing it with product #5 (below) when I desire a touch more coverage.
    5. Ardency Inn Custom Coverage Concentrate in Light-Medium Olive (Reviewed HERE and HERE)...the tiniest amount adds significant coverage and opacity to any foundation and possesses exceptional lasting power.
    6. Chanel Poudre Universelle Compact in Preface (Spring 2014)...a light slightly peachy beige that combats shine while adding subtle luminosity to the skin.  This is lighter than Chanel Les Beiges #20 and just right for my winter skin.
    7. RMS Buriti Bronzer...an organic cream formula with a true light brown hue, this is my go-to winter bronzer/contour for natural, glowing skin.
    8. Billion Dollar Brows Brow Powder in Taupe...this true ash brown makes my brows full and defined and never oxidizes red...love.
    9. Billion Dollar Brows Brow Brush...a brilliant companion for the BDB brow powder.
    10. Surratt Autographique Eyeliner in Chat Noir...accidentally missing from the picture but definitely lauded in the video, this liquid liner is like no other.  The ink is a potent black, it flows from the felt tip with ease and lasts the entire day without transferring or smudging.  Truly a top of the line product!
    11. Chanel Illusion d'Ombre in Diapason (#92)...new for Spring 2014, this purple-brown wonder has complex shimmer that shifts shades when the light its hit.  It is exquisite and will be getting its own close up review soon!
    12. Jouer Lip Enhancer...silky smooth and completely clear, this is the perfect base for lip color and it keeps my lips moisturized for hours.
    13. Lime Crime lipstick in Coquette...not new, just new to me.  This lovely, creamy, true light nude beige was a Christmas gift from a dear friend and I couldn't be happier with its full coverage effect.  Trying Lime Crime Babette next ; ) Also available at Urban Outfitters.
    14. Le Metier de Beaute Hydra Creme Matte Lipcolor in Amore (LE)...this pink-nude-peach hybrid is velvety smooth, highly pigmented and keeps my lips hydrated despite its matte texture.  Completely sublime and LE, so track it down while you can!
    15. Buxom Lip Cream in White Russian...I couldn't fit this gloss into the final video edit but this cult favorite offers a delightful tingle and beautiful pink beige wash of color that enhances every lip color.
    16. Surratt Relevee Eyelash Curler...effortlessly adding life to my lashes, this has become a daily ritual.
    17. Chantecaille Supreme Cils Mascara...this formula needs its own review and sadly I couldn't fit it into the video (time constraints!).  Extremely full, long lashes with no smudging or flaking whatsoever...the best mascara formula I've tried to date!
    18. Ramon Monegal fragrance in Cuirelle...a sophisticated warm leather and honey juice, this has incredible lasting power and smells beyond entrancing in the winter months.
    19. Seth Wegter Bags Cosmetics Case...made in a variety of gorgeous leathers, I don't know what I ever did without them.

Bottom Line: I've truly missed doing videos but the last few weeks simply haven't been conducive to the process!  I hope you enjoyed this product overview...I've amassed so many wonderful beauty-oriented items lately and am thrilled to finally have the opportunity to properly share them!

I can't wait for your questions and comments and hope you have a marvelous weekend...what's new?

Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation (New Formula)...Swatches of EVERY Shade

Above: The Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation comes in a glorious red-hued glass bottle.
A few months ago, Koh Gen Do released their newly reformulated Maifanshi Aqua Foundation; this gorgeous, light formula, which retails for $62 and comes in seven re-numbered shades, is designed to mimic the freshness and glow of post-facial skin (swatches of the original formula HERE).  From the stunning red-tinged glass bottle to the perfectly calibrated pump dispenser (two pumps does the trick for me!), this formula provides buildable sheer to medium high-definition coverage that leaves the complexion balanced and radiant.  I dare ask, what's not to love?

Above: All shades of the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation, on the cusp of being swatched!
Here's what Koh Gen Do has to say about the product...

Created to mimic the optical reflectance of a post facial treatment, the new technically advanced Aqua Foundation series finishes the skin to look brighter and healthier for an ideal natural finish. With radiance in mind, the Aqua Foundation is infused with a RGB powder that enhances the natural tone of the complexion for a brighter and poreless skin texture.
A Key to Giving the Impression of a Perfect Complexion
    • - Finish without powder for a Natural Glowing 'post-facial' impression
    • - Finish with powder for a professional Porcelain impression
    • - Made with minerals from the deep waters of Bretagne and botanical emollients and extracts.
    • - Added skin color control factor to reproduce radiance on the skin.
    • - Two new powders: skin brightener and soft focus effect powder that gives diffusion to make skin appear softer and brighter. Reflects light to erase shadows from uneven surfaces and pores giving a smooth flawless impression.
    • - Integrated with high performance conditioning ingredients that supplement a self-moisturizing property for long flawless wear.
    • - No artificial colors, fragrances, petroleum-based mineral oil or paraben.

Kindly scroll on for shade descriptions, a plethora of swatches in various lighting situations as well as a closeup of my match, #213 and images of the formula on my face...

Above: Swatches of all shades in intense sunlight.
Shade Descriptions (based on my experience):

    1. 012: Very light pale beige for fair skin with neutral to pink undertones (@N/NW/NC10-15)
    2. 002: Very light beige for fair skin with neutral to yellow undertones (@N/NC 15)
    3. 013:  Light beige for fair to light skin with neutral to pink undertones (@N/NW 20-25)
    4. 113: Light beige for light skin with yellow undertones (@NC 20)
    5. 123: Light beige for light/light-medium skin with neutral to yellow undertones (@N/NC 25)
    6. 140: Medium warm beige for medium to medium-tan skin with golden undertones (@N/NC 30-35)
    7. 213: Light beige for light skin with true yellow beige undertones (@NC 23-25)

Above: Swatches of all shades in direct sunlight.
Above: Swatches of all shades in moderate sunlight.
Above: Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation in #213.
I was privileged to receive a full-sized bottle of the Maifanshi Aqua Foundation in #213, which is the best match for my NC 23-25 skin.  It is closest in tone to the BE-1 in the original formula, though in my experience, it is a bit more beige in tone which adds to its overall depth, making it slightly darker than BE-1; I am pleased with this change as BE-1 was excellent in terms of undertone but always was a bit too light on me on its own, ultimately requiring me to mix in a drop of OC-2 to achieve the perfect shade.

Above: The foundation bottle is replete with a sturdy pump that dispenses the perfect amount of product every time.
Above: #213 in the new formula is very similar to BE-1 in the original formula.
Texturally speaking, this formula is sheer, though, in my opinion, not as sheer as the previous formula.  It is fluid in nature (as its moniker would imply) and delightfully unscented.  When applied over primer (either the Koh Gen Do Makeup Base in Yellow or LMdB Peau Vierge), I find that two pumps buffed into the skin with a damp Beauty Blender is sufficient to provide light-medium coverage over my entire face.

The pure yellow beige tone of the #213, effectively evens out my visage and doesn't oxidize, even after hours of wear. Speaking of which, the wear time of this formula is vastly improved.  In the lovely original formula, I got approximately 5-6 hours of wear before fading set in; in the new formula, I easily get 7-8 hours before finding myself even thinking about the need for a touch up.  This is, without question, where I think the new formula excels!

The finish is what I would deem a satin matte that gets glowier with wear, although, thankfully,  it never degrades to unpleasant oiliness.  I love how natural this looks, especially on days when I am going for the "no makeup makeup" look.  Upon application, it refines pores and smooths uneven surfaces while it simultaneously renders itself completely invisible on the skin, thereby substantiating its formidable HD claims.

Below are some images of me wearing the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation in #213 in both indoor and outdoor lighting...

    Above: #213 in indoor lighting.
    Above: #213 in outdoor lighting.
    Above: #213 in indoor lighting.
    Above: #213 in outdoor lighting.
    Above: #213 in outdoor lighting.
Bottom Line: The Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation formula is fantastic.  Its sheer but buildable coverage truly gives the look of healthy, glowing, well-cared for skin.  If you are looking for a light foundation with a radiant, lasting finish, then this well may be your answer!

My love for Koh Gen Do is no secret, as I've written about it on the blog many times over; the line is entirely innovative in its approach to high-definitition base products and skincare.  In the nearly three years since personally discovering the line, I haven't gone a day without using the brilliant Spa Cleansing Water and the Aqua Foundation Illuminator in Sheer Beige has been a daily staple since early November.  I am excited to add the Maifanshi Aqua Foundation to my foundation rotation and highly recommend it to those looking for imperceptible natural coverage with a luminous finish.

Fresh from Australia: Mirenesse Lip Bomb + Flawless Revolution Foundation

I recently had the chance to try some cutting-edge beauty products from the Australian brand, Mirenesse.  This line offers a full spectrum of cosmetics, and being the foundation and lip gloss devotee that I am, I opted to experience the Lip Bomb and Flawless Revolution Foundation, much to my utter delight!

Retailing for around $35 (based on the current Australian to USD conversion), the Lip Bomb Glossy Lacquer Stain Crystal Shine formula offers the benefits of a pigmented lip color, lip gloss and stain while simultaneously keeping the lips hydrated and comfortable for hours.  Here's what Mirenesse has to say about the Lip Bomb...

A Revolutionary colour that combines gloss, stain and lacquer all in one!

A satisfying NEW INNOVATION in lip colour; beyond gloss, stain or lip lacquer. Colour that drenches your lips for a juicy high impact colour that's feather-light and super-moist with a velvety finish. Power packed with non-smearing pigment that lasts and lasts. Colours may be mixed easily to create countless intense or nude looks depending on your fashion mood! Infused with a breath refreshing mint taste and Lip Perfecting Spheres plus caring vitamins. Who says you can't have it all?, Apply a small amount and mix shades to create your own personal shade! Infinity Lip™ Applicator allows for professional application of precision colour. Don't apply too much! It's better to apply a thin layer first then build it up if you want more colour. For extra long wear pair with a matching lip liner.

    Key Ingredients:
    • Lip Perfecting Spheres,
    • Botanical Oils & Vitamin E
    • Formulated for Sensitive Skin, Mirenesse Cosmetics are pharmaceutically formulated using organic Australian and safe, high quality and unique ingredients to minimise the risk of allergies.

Shade #18 is a gorgeous pale peachy pink with complex golden shimmer that, despite its light texture, builds to full opacity with one pass.  It has a minty taste and brief slight tingle that is not uncomfortable on the lips.  I love the slightly thicker non-sticky texture...it truly builds dimension on the lips, making them appear lush and full. The unique flocked doe-foot applicator spreads the product evenly but since it is so concentrated, start with just a bit on the wand to avoid over-applying...a little goes a long way!

Above: Swatches of the Mirenesse Lip Bomb in indoor lighting.
Above: More swatches...I love how opaque it is, even when blended out! The shimmer is present, but formula still feels  inordinately creamy.
Above: Mirenesse Lip Bomb #18 alone on the lips.

What would the experimentation with a beauty line be without taking a foray into foundation territory?  Retailing for close to $80 (based on the current exchange rate), the Mirenesse Flawless Revolution 3-in-1 Perfector features a moisturizer, primer and foundation hybrid, harmoniously suspended in a futuristic spiral, which is dispensed through an airless pump.  Here are the official details from Mirenesese...

Beyond makeup. A 3-in-I multitasking skin perfector with revolutionary Chromafusion and Tripeptide Technology to instantly layer skin with an invisible skin like 24hr triplex matrix of line smoothing moisturiser, pore refining primer, and sheer colour corrector.

    Key Ingredients:
    1st Layer, The Moisturiser:
    • Betaglucan – protective antioxidant complex
    • Hyaluronate – the super hydrator plumps fine lines
    2nd Layer, The Primer:
    • Silicone fillers with mineral sunscreen prime and smooth the skin
    3rd Layer, The Colour:
    • Chromafusion Transparent pigments cover skin naturally without a mask-like effect

Ideal for getting the advantages of both skincare and makeup in one product! Once a day fast application on face and neck layers 3 products in the correct sequence, sizing each layer’s particles so it perfectly slips one layer on top of the other layer without you having to do it.

You’ll be ready to go in a flash knowing you have applied the best of skincare and the best of makeup all in one Flawless Revolution.

    • 100% Perfect smooth firm skin in a flash that stays that way all day!
    • Corrects signs of ageing such as lines, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, loss of firmness in one simple application to leave skin looking flawless in a single revolution.
    • Over time the amazing skin treatment benefits will be revealed to leave your skin free from discolourations, dullness, and you will see a renewed luminosity and hydration.

I selected Flawless Vienna, which is a neutral light beige shade for N/NC/NW 23-25 skin tones.  When I first pumped it out of the bottle, I thought it was going to be too pink, but once it blended into my skin, it morphed into a lovely light neutral (with even slightly golden leanings) beige...a seamless match, indeed!  The texture is initially a touch startling because all three parts of the formula are still a bit separated...one dab of my dampened Beauty Blender, however, and the foundation was instantly ready for application.

Silky and easy to blend, this foundation offers buildable medium to medium/full coverage; I find that two pumps is ample to cover my entire face with a natural satin matte finish that is glowy without implementing the usage of shimmer.  I chose not to set this with powder and found that a touch up wasn't necessary for at least six hours of wear.  It neither pooled into pores, nor settled into fine lines; in fact, quite the opposite was true.  A single application created a smooth and even canvas, prepped and primed for the makeup to come.

There is a subtle herbal scent to this formula (which I didn't find bothersome) and the ingredients have in no way irritated my very sensitive skin.  Although I haven't yet used it long enough to weigh in on the long-term skincare benefits, I love the way it makes my skin look...imperfections be gone!  All in all, a delightful foundation discovery.
Above: Swatches in natural outdoor shade.
    Above: Swatches in direct sunlight.
Above: Mirenesse Flawless Revolution in #21 Flawless Vienna...I took these images at the end of a seven hour teaching day which is a testament to its lasting power.
Above: An extreme closeup (yikes!)...as always, no retouching here.  This truly creates a flawless finish!
Above: Happily wearing the Mirenesse Flawless Revolution Foundation in #21 Flawless Vienna.
Bottom Line: I love the Mirenesse products I have had the privilege of trying thus far.  The Lip Bomb formula is truly unique.  From its space-age applicator to its lush, long lasting color, this lipstick/gloss/stain is incredible and #18 is the quintessential peachy pink for pale lip shade lovers.  The Flawless Revolution Foundation was a brilliant surprise...I honestly wasn't prepared for the formidable medium coverage and hours of wear that this spiral sensation yields.  In light of this tremendously positive experience, I  cannot wait to try other products from the Mirenesse line!

Have YOU tried any beauty products from Mirenesse?  Please share your thoughts and recommendations!
