Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer…Swatches of SX 06

**Update 7/06/12…I have since swatched every shade in the line HERE!
The Kevyn Aucoin line, currently available at NordstromBarneys NY and Bloomingdales/Space NK boutiques is known for its streamlined collection of professional grade cosmetics, originally designed by famed make up artist Kevyn Aucoin himself.  I remember faithfully reading his column in Allure magazine years ago, well before his untimely passing, and am so happy that his legacy lives on in his products.
Kevyn aucoin sensual skin SX 06 enhancer

One of his premiere items is the Sensual Skin Enhancer (SSE).  Intended to be both a foundation and concealer, this tiny pot of product retails for $45 and provides more coverage than bottle upon bottle of traditional foundation can.  This product can be purchased at NordstromCult BeautyBeauty.comBloomingdalesBarney’s NYNeiman Marcus, Space NK,  Bergdorf Goodman and Dermstore.

As a NC 25 with neutral to yellow undertones, I own the Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX 06,  a light golden beige.  This shade is a perfect combination of natural beige and warmth, and, when properly applied, completely melts into my skin for a flawless finish.

The product itself is very dense…I have owned this little jar for years and when I choose to use it, only a minuscule amount of the foundation (about the size of a grain of rice) is necessary to cover my entire face.  There is a great deal of discussion about how to best apply this product; some like to sheer it out with moisturizer, others use a damp sponge to press it into the skin.  Upon moisturizing and priming (the SSE is not inherently dry, but I find a primer helps it to glide on), I prefer to use my fingers to gently pat it onto my face, blending thoroughly along the way so that the coverage appears as natural as possible.  I find that my fingers warm the product and help it to blend more effectively than a brush or sponge is able to achieve.

As previously mentioned, the coverage is unprecedented, however, the biggest caveat for me is the scent. I don’t necessarily mind scented products…in fact two out of three of my regular foundation choices are have fragrance (By Terry’s Cover Expert reviewed HERE and HERE and Rouge Bunny Rouge’s Milk Aquarelle reviewed HERE).  However, this scent is so heavy (it has a very strong perfume odor) that it doesn’t ever seem to completely dissipate, which I find bothersome…this is unfortunate because SSE is such a marvelously concentrated product that I really enjoy many of its qualities overall.

This product can be purchased at Nordstrom, Cult Beauty, Beauty.com, Bloomingdales, Barney’s NY, Neiman Marcus, Space NK, Bergdorf Goodman and Dermstore.

Bottom Line: There are times during the year when I rediscover the SSE and apply it with wonder and appreciation, only to be haunted by the overwhelming perfume of its being.  If you don’t have a sensitive nose and are in the market for a foundation that covers everything you’ve ever dreamt of and more, I encourage you to try the SSE (as previously mentioned, currently available at NordstromCult BeautyBeauty.comBloomingdalesBarney’s NYNeiman Marcus, Space NK,  Bergdorf Goodman and Dermstore).…it is a wonder product whose intensely potent contents will probably last you a lifetime.

I really want to get this, but my city doesn't sell Kevyn aucoin! I'm hoping my researching online and seeing everyone's swatches of the different colors helps me figure out my shade!

    Hello,

Thanks for your question! I think that Shade #4 will be perfect for you…it is for light skin (close to NC 20) with yellow undertones. It can be applied opaquely or sheered out when combined with moisturizer or sunscreen!

I hope that helps and thanks for reading…do let me know what you end up deciding…

My pleasure, Nisha! It is so incredibly concentrated that the tiniest bit covers an insane amount of facial territory ; ) As a concealer, I would just take an minuscule amount and pat it under the eyes with my ring finger…it really benefits from warming up so it can melt into the skin.

Hello and thank you for your question!

I think that you could wear #6 or #7 comfortably (these are both closer to the NC 25 side) and if you feel closer to a NC 30, then #8 could work. #6 is a tad more yellow than #7 and since we are headed into winter, likely that would be your best match! It is an oil-based foundation, so I would use an oil-based moisturizer to mix with it (I like the Embryolisse…from France, not very expensive, can be ordered on Amazon).

Hope that helps and do take care!

    Hi Beauty Professor!

We exchanged comments a few months ago about RBR Milk Aquarelle (which I purchased on the strength of your recommendation and LOVE!). I've been perusing the blog today for your concealer reviews and came across the KA SSA review and swatches. I'm looking for a concealer for undereye circles and some redness around my nose and mouth (not blemishes). My skin is dry and dull – New England winters! – so I want something hydrating and illuminating, but with great staying power. What do you think? Is the KA SSA worth a shot?

      Hello Suzy!

Good to hear from you! I am so thrilled that you are pleased with the RBR Milk Aquarelle foundation…it is such a special formula. In response to your question, the KA SSE is indeed highly pigmented and will cover almost anything, however, if it is not mixed with a moisturizer, I fear that it may translate as a bit dry on skin that struggles with dryness to begin with. If you are up for experimenting with mixing, then it could be just the product you are looking for; perhaps mixing it with a bit of illuminating product (like MAC Strobe Cream) could do the trick to provide coverage and glow. In terms of concealer, I really like Cle de Peau concealer (expensive but very creamy and a little goes a long way), Le Metier de Beaute Peau Vierge Concealer (also quite an investment, but great for providing illumination and coverage on circles and redness) and RMS Un Cover Up (super natural ingredients, good coverage and hydration and very illuminating…also not as expensive…review on this coming soon!).

I hope that helps…do keep me posted on what you decide!

    Hi Beauty Professor,

I have been wanting to purchase/try this multi-purpose Kevyn Aucoin SSE. But for $45, I need to make sure that the formula is right for my skin. I have acne-prone (sort-of) sensitive skin and since the first ingredient is 'Mineral Oil', this could irritate/clog pores (depending on your skin type, I guess). My question is, have you had any problems aside from the scent/fragrance you mentioned? Such as rash/breakouts, etc? I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!!!

    Hello Tia,

Thanks for stopping by! With regards to your question, I have very sensitive skin as well…I didn't experience any breakouts, however, I haven't used it often enough (e.g., everyday for the long term) to properly test it. In terms of foundations that I KNOW don't break me out, I love By Terry Cover Expert and Tom Ford Traceless Foundation Stick…for a drugstore variation, Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation is amazing as well!

I hope that helps…please keep me posted on what you decide : )

      Hi Jazmine,

Thanks for the question. While this line has great options for skin tones of all shades, there are less options for those with pink undertones, like you. I would suggest trying the #9, which is a medium beige with rosy undertones!

    Hi TBP
I nearly always have trouble finding a foundation colour that suits my skin tone- I'm not that special generally though! In SSE I mix Numbers 7 & 9 together ( a touch more 9 than 7) and its a pretty good match. A lot of foundations have a yellow undertone and I need one with a little pink even though a can look ruddy with the wrong blush. What shade do you recommend in the GA Maestro and the LMdeB ? Very grateful for your advice x

      Hello Anon,

Thanks for your question! In light of your current color matches (and I am operating under the impression that you are using more #9, which is darker…putting you at approximately a NW 30 or so), I recommend the GA Maestro in #7 and the LMdB Classic Flawless Foundation in #9. I hope that helps!

Take care and have a wonderful rest of the weekend…xoxo,

Hello! Thank you for posting this review and your previous post on the different swatches for each skin tone! I found both helpful in getting me one step closer to finalizing this product as a staple however I am still undecided about the color. I wear #9 in Armani's luminous silk foundation (NC45 in Mac's studio fix powder) and Mac's mineralized skin finish in Dark. This weekend I purchased the Kevyn Aucoin skin enhancer in SX11 for the sole purpose of highlighting when contouring (with Nars' concealer stick in Cacao). Although I have not used it yet I am starting to think it is not light enough for highlighting (based on the consultants application after sheering with moisturizer). What are your thoughts? Do you recommend that I keep the SX11 and use it for under foundation concealer and for summer highlighting and also purchase SX9 for fall/winter highlighting OR should I do away with SX11 and just purchase SX9 OR should I keep SX11 by itself? I'm sorry if I overwhelm you in any way! I'm a rookie to make up and lately have been intrigued by the versatility of makeup application so your thoughts/suggestions/recommendations are strongly appreciated and valued! I thank you in advance for your help and look forward to hearing from you soon!!!

    Hello Codidyer,

My pleasure! I am so glad to hear that my insane love of swatching has been useful for you! In light of your color matches, I am guessing that #8 could be a great highlighter for you…it sounds like you have warm yellow undertones, and #9 has a true neutral to rosy beige undertone which may not work as well with your coloring. It all depends on the return policy options you have but in a perfect world, I would try #8 for highlighting and keep #11 if it matches you now as a foundation/concealer…that way, you could also mix a littel #8 with #11 to get your perfect highlighting shade all year round!

I hope that helps…please take care and do keep me posted on what you decide…xoxo,

I recently purchased SX:03 and I am having a lot of issues applying the foundation in general. I have been using it in combination with a moisturizer due to the fact that I have very dry skin. I have noticed that within about 10 minutes of application it is starting to cake. I am unsure if this is due to the amount of product (I warm/mix a little less then a grain of rice with about a dime of moisturizer), my skin type, or if it is simply the wrong type of moisturizer. Would you suggest that I try the product with a primer after applying my normal moisturizer? What are your thoughts?

      Hi Emily,

Thanks for your question. Although this product is wonderfully pigmented, it can be a bit challenging to work with. I like to mix it with a lighter foundation (like By Terry Sheer Expert…I have a video on how I do this on my YouTube Channel…www.youtube.com/beautyprofessor) and then apply it over my primer (I use Le Metier de Beaute Peau Vierge #2) with my fingertips or beauty blender. They key is to pat it into the skin so it becomes one with your face…I hope that helps!!

Let me know if you have other questions…experimenting to find what works best for you is what this product is all about!

Hi, I am a #123 in Makeup Forever and NC30 in MAC Studio Fix… Although the NC30 Mac foundation is a shade too dark for me, the #123 in Makeup Forever is PERFECT…

I recently ordered the shade SX07, do you think this would be a good shade for me?

I have very light olive skin – light medium skin tone. I ordered the SX07 already but I am rethinking since you use SX06 and you are an NC25 in MAC…

Do you think the SX07 would be good for me? Or should I go with SX06 (the kind you use) ?

    Thank you so much

I am also a #123 in Makeup Forever HD Foundation. Someone said that the SX07 in the SSE is tan and dark, is that true? Do you think it will work for me? I was going to get the SX06, but was scared the yellow/gold tones would be too much. I have a light medium skin tone.. What do you think? Do you think the 7 would be too dark on me? Please help thank you so much!!

      Hello Thea,

Thanks for your questions…I think that the SX07 will be a good match for you. the SX06 is closer to NC 20 than it is to NC 25, so if you are closer to NC 30 (but lighter), then the SX07 should work. It is a bit more neutral (rather than extremely golden like the SX06) and is around a NC 25-27. If I were to wear a foundation now through the fall, I would opt for the SX07 as the SX06 would be a bit too light.

      I hope that helps!!

    Hi,

So the #7 ended being a lil too light for me… It is a nice color but I need maybe a shade up than #7 or a bit warmer, because the SX07 seems to be too neutral and looks a little ashy. Would you suggest the SX06? I read somewhere else that someone thinks the #6 is a perfect NC25/NC30 in Mac ? Do you think that is true? My next decision would be between the SX06 and the SX09…. What do you think?

The 6 might be good since it is more golden and maybe I need a "warmer" coolor, and the 9 might be good too, but I am not sure now… The 7 is a nice shade, just need one that is a little warmer/golden/not as neautral/maybe more tan/darker? Shade up?

Hi Thea…thanks for the update and sorry to hear that #7 is a bit too light. If you are looking for a bit more warmth and depth, then I suggest getting the #8 or #11 (just as yellow but a tad deeper) to mix with your #7 to achieve the perfect shade. The beauty of these little pots is that the shades can be combined to create an exact match. I like #8 but it is a little too golden/olive (almost a touch green in certain lights) on its own…that is why I lean towards suggesting the #11 to mix with the #7.

      I hope that helps…xoxo,

I found this on a website, do you agree with it? Since the 7 was a big light for me, do you think I should go for the 6 ? Or maybe even the 9 or 10? I am NC30 MAC, maybe a one shade lighter than that, or around a 123/123 in MakeupForever Foundation… Thank you so much.

    SX06 – NC25-30 (strong yellow undertones)
SX07 – NC22 (lighter and more neutral toned than SX06)
    SX08 – NC35 (strong yellow undertones)
    SX09 – NW25-30
    SX10 – NC30 (neutral leaning warm)

      Hi Thea,

I mostly agree with this…however, I would place SX07 at a NC 23-25 and SX06 as a NC 23-25 but much more yellow. SX06 is not anywhere near a true NC 30 in my experience.

Hi, I bought the #11 during summer time but didn't realize that it was way too orange for my skintone until my boyfriend pointed it out when we were under the sun (after weeks of using it, might I add.. so embarrassing!) I realized that the shade is much better during nighttime, when lighting is minimal. However, I really want to get a SSE for the daytime! I have a warm undertone and I'm pretty olive/medium colored, I've almost completely lost my summer glow as well. I'm leaning towards either #6 or #8. What do you think?

    Hi Beauty Professor,

I have just recently stumbled across the KA SSE and I am very keen to try it. I'm in New Zealand and haven't been able to find any places that stock it so will have to buy online without trying it first.

I have naturally olive skin but living down south means I haven't had a decent tan in a while, but i also have high colour in my checks. I have been using NW15 in MAC studio fix which is pretty perfect right now (while I'm at my whitest) but do find I have to apply a bit more to my checks to hide the pink. What colour would you recommend now and then in summer when I will be a bit more tanned?

Thank you so much for your help.

Thank you so much for your detailed review and comments- it's been so helpful as I'm trying to find my right shade/ shades. I'm of Asian and Hispanic heritage so I've got golden olive skin. I'm thinking I'm probably more an 11 bc I'm closer to an NC 40 or a 6.5/7 in armani luminous silk. Would you recommend 11 or a 7? Also would you recommend 6 as an under eye concealer/ contour color? Thanks again!!!!

      Hi Liezl,

Happy to help! I think that #11 will be the best shade for your skin…it is like an Armani #7. The KA SSE #7 is more of a NC 25 shade so I think it will be too light as a foundation. The KA SSE #6 could be a good concealer/highlighter for you!

      Hope that helps…xx,

Hi,same question again here 🙂 . I am NC25 ish, maybe NC20-NC25,wear Fiji in Nars Sheer Glow and #120 in MUFE HD foundation. I have yellow undertones with combination skin, oily in the T-zone and quite dry leaning to normal on other areas? Will this concealer work for my skin type, and the shade, oohh the shade, most important of all,I guess my shade is SX06? Same like yours?

Anyway bless you for answering everybody's questions. That is so sweet and nice of you! Thank you! :)))

      Hello Seima,

I would guess that you could get away with #6 and/or #7 (I own both and they are very similar in terms of depth, #6 is just much more yellow!). The tiniest bit of this goes a very long way on all skin types and I would recommend this more as a concealer than an overall foundation, just because it requires a lot of skin prepping and priming and great deal of blending!

      I hope that helps…xoxo,

Hello! I hope you still see this comment- I normally use SX 07 but tend to tan in the summer. Should I get SX 08 or 10? Thanks so much – Karla

      Hi Karla,

I would get #10 or #11 and then make a custom mix between #7 and your darker shade…you'll have many more options this way!

Hiya! I was wondering if you can help me on my search for the right color for kevyn aucoin sse. I am a 120 in makeupforeverHD foundation. I got matched up to macs many times but all the colors looked too orangy on me. I usually get the light or light/medium colors in concealors. I like a brightening effect under my eye without it looking ashy or dull. Right now I'm using maybellines age-rewind concealor in neautralizer since its yellow and top it off with NYX wand concealor in beige. I do add a lighter powder to set the under eye area. So I'm not sure if it would be sx4 or sx6 for me?
I havent seen anyone recommend or use sx4 yet except one girl on instagram thats around my color.

    Please help! thankyou

      Hello Aisha,

Thanks for your question; it will all depend on how bright you want the effect to me. #06 is definitely a touch lighter than your MUFE HD 120 (I wear 118) and #4 is an even lighter shade. Have you seen my post with all shades swatched yet? If not, it can be found here:

    Hi there Beauty Professor

I have purchased both SX 03 for when I'm pale and SX10 for when I'm tanned. At the moment I am tanned and using the SX10 which i love but i feel its a bit too yellow for me as I do have some pinky undertones but looking at the SX09 it seems very pink. What would you recommend?

    Thank you for your help

      Hi Kimberly,

Thanks for your question. If you feel like SX 10 is too yellow, then SX 9 would be the way to go (for mixing purposes, of course). I suspect that a little would go a long way to creating a perfect neutral beige shade!

    Hello,

I'm from Holland and we don't have stores or counters that sell Kevyn Aucoin, but after reading all the great experiences from others I would really like to try it. At this moment I'm a NC20 in MAC pro longwear foundation. Which would be the best colour in de sse? In a concealer I'm a NW25/NW30. Which colour of the sse would fit best as a concealer?

    Thank you so much!

      Hi Yvonne,

I would recommend shade #07 as a concealer…it is a wonderful light neutral beige and covers discoloration nicely!

      Hope that helps,

    Hi Beauty Professor!
I recently bought this in sx06 but it was a bit dark and too yellow for me! As a girl with asian skintones I thought that this would be good but it was very yellow. I usually wear chanel foundations in beige 20. Do you have any recommendations as to what shade I should buy?
