By Terry Foundation: Cover Expert Swatch Comparison Time…

Last month, I reviewed one of my favorite foundations, By Terry Cover Expert Foundation (complete review found HERE).  Its impeccable coverage, lasting power and skin care benefits have made it a staple in my daily routine.
While I wear #7 Vanilla Beige, a yellow-based light hue in the NC 20-25 range, I recently had the opportunity to swatch the #8 Intense Beige which is closer to a NC 27-30.  Intense Beige seems to have a slightly warmer/peachier undertone which makes it a touch darker than the Vanilla Beige (which is definitely more yellow in undertone).  I think that this will be a logical step up in depth when summer rolls around and wanted to share a side by side comparison of the swatches for those with a similar skin tone.
Below (in direct sunlight): Top swatch–Intense Beige #8, bottom swatch–Vanilla Beige #7.

**UPDATE: For additional comparisons, swatches of each Cover Expert shade can be found HERE!

I've been searching for reviews/swatches of this foundation online for a while and it seems that you're the only whose done it so thanks! I was just wondering which color you would recommend for an nc15/c3 skin tone. Just light with warm undertones. I'm deciding between shade 2 or 3 but am not really sure. Thanks

    Hello Victoria,

Thanks so much for the comment. I am thrilled to hear that my swatches are helpful for you…I agree, there was very little by way of swatches when I first started using this product. I was fortunate enough to see the line in person when I chose my foundation but would have had a very tough time ordering it online sight unseen!

I would think that #3 would probably be perfect for you…it is for very light skin with a yellow/golden undertone which sounds like your description. When I first bought the foundation in January (at my palest NC 20), I found that the #3 was too light for me (thereby settling on the #7, which was just right but is now too light for me in the summertime when my body gets a bit darker).

I hope that helps…let me know what you decide and how it works out!!

    Warm regards,

    HI –
I wonder if u could help me- I'm looking at Cover Expert in 9- I have no access to this product where I live- The spacenk consultant said I would be a 9 as I am Sante Fe in Nars Sheer matt- any thoughts- Thanks

    Hello Jo,

Thanks so much for the question. Based on the fact that you wear Santa Fe in Nars, I think that #9 in Cover Expert will probably work. It is a hair darker than #8 (which is a touch darker than #7, which is about NC 23-25). In other words, #7, #8 and #9 are all very close in tone and depth (I am betting you could get away with wearing any of them).

#8 is a for medium skin tones with peachy/golden undertones and #9 is a good shade for medium skin with yellow/golden undertones…they are both around a NC 30 or so. Both are fairly close to Nars Santa Fe as well…have you seen my post with all Cover Expert shades swatched yet? If not, that would be a helpful resource before placing your order…the link is:

I wish you the best when you place your order…I always suggest getting samples (in your case, I'd ask for #7, #8 and #9) with your order if at all possible, just to be safe. That way you can try it in person before opening the actual product. You may want to check for sure, but I think that you can exchange at Space NK within a set amount of days if the product hasn't been opened.

Keep me posted on what you decide!!

    Warm regards,

    Hello
I just actively went looking for your reply- It somehow did not email me- thank you for taking the time to reply. I was thinking that mabye I was 7 as I am more light to medium toned- I am also 5.5 in the new Maestro by Armani. My husband is visiting Hong Kond- so I thought I might put this on my shopping list- now all I have to do is stare at the swatches for a while- do you prefer the cover expert to the sheer expert?
    Thanks

      Hello Jo,

I am glad that you checked in again…I am not sure why you weren't informed of my reply to your post, but am happy that we've reconnected! I think that you will find #7 to be perfect if you are light to medium. I can wear 5.5 and 6.5 in the Maestro and I wear #7 in the fall/winter and #9 in the summer when I am tan. Both Cover Expert and Sheer Expert are lovely foundations, but I prefer the coverage of the Cover Expert…it is medium to full while looking extremely natural!

To close, I think you will be pleased with #7 in Cover Expert as we head into winter…do keep me posted on what happens ; )

      Take care and xo,

    Hello Shanajp!

Thanks for stopping by…I think that #4 will be your best match…in light of the other foundation shades that match your skin tone, it sounds like you have more neutral to rosy undertones and #7 in Cover Expert is quite yellow. In turn, the #4 (which is for light skin that is neutral to rosy) is your best bet!

I hope that helps…keep me posted on what transpires and do take care ; )

I know I'm late to this party, but first let me say how much I love your reviews. They are smart, funny, informative and always well written. I am now ready to spring for a tube (hello, Barneys Beauty Event!), but I am unsure which shade to pick. I currently use Le Metier #5; thanks for any help!

      Hello Melinda,

Thank you for your very kind words about my blog! I am so happy you found your way here…and one can never be too late to the foundation party ; ) I love February…between the Barney's Beauty Event and the Neiman Marcus Beauty Event this month, the ability to rationalize pricy makeup purchases is unprecedented! I know that definitely I will be imbibing ; )

With regards to your question, I think that the By Terry Cover Expert in #5 would be your best match…it is a light-medium beige with neutral to peachy undertones. In pictures, it looks almost identical to the LMdB in #5!

I hope this is helpful…please keep me posted on what you end up with.

      Warm regards…xoxo,
